March 29, 2005 UA Innovation Showcase
The inaugural UA Innovation Showcase is March 29 from 9 - 5 pm in the
Student Union North Ballroom. The Innovation Showcase will highlight university
technology and its benefits to Tucson and Southern Arizona through the
creation of new products and new jobs.
To participate, you must be a technology company that meets one of the
following requirements:
• Founded by UA faculty member, student, staff or alumni
• Have licensed technology from the UA
• Contributed $1 Million or more in research funding to the UA
• A tenant at the UA Science and Technology Park
• A client in the Arizona Center for Innovation
• 25% or more of your work force is UA graduates
March 15, 2005: Innovative Workshop for Entrepreneurs Seeking Financing
"How to First Address Market Needs…Then Investor Needs"
The Arizona Center for Innovation and the Pima Community College Small
Business Development Center offered a workshop for entrepreneurs titled,
“How to First Address Market Needs…Then Investor Needs."
The workshop addressed homework that needs to be done before committing
personal funds and/or approaching investors, what investors want to hear,
and how to best present your case to get the capital you need. Topics
included:
• Studying the market to ensure there really is a business
• Creating a strategy and plan to address the market
• Investor expectations
The discussion leaders were Rick Gibson, president of Clear Blue Ventures,
and Theo Kipnis, a business analyst for the PCC Small Business Development
Center.
Seminar Series July 21, 2004: Investor Development and Grant Writing
Investor Development and Grant Writing was the final seminar in the series
of ten presented by The Arizona Center for Innovation. This seminar analyzed
the important role of investment for businesses by demonstrating the basics
for grant writing and highlighting the best practices for obtaining venture
capital.
Seminar Series April 21, 2004: Product Development and Manufacturing
Product Development and Manufacturing was the seventh seminar in a series
of ten to be presented by The Arizona Center for Innovation. This seminar
focused on various manufacturing options (in-house, offshore, contract
manufacturing) as well as best manufacturing methods and practices, quality
control/ISO certification, and environmental issues. AzCI would like to
thank presenters Wayne Lundeberg, President and CEO of Catalina Tool &
Mold and Edgar Allen, Director of Operations of Arizona MEP- Manufacturing
Extension Partnership.
Seminar Series March 17, 2004: Financial Management
Financial Management was the sixth seminar in a series of ten to be presented
by The Arizona Center for Innovation. This seminar will explain how numbers
are an important tool for business success and will include a mock negotiation
entitled “Why does an investor expect to own so much of my company?”
Thanks to presenters Mike Arnold, Founder and former CEO of Modular Mining
Systems, and Bob Fick, Advanced Business Analyst with the Pima Community
College Small Business Development Center.
Seminar Series February 18, 2004: Market Analysis and Market Research
Market Analysis and Market Research was the fifth seminar in a series
of ten presented by The Arizona Center for Innovation. The seminar provided
practical advice on defining, researching and evaluation markets.
Seminar Series January 21, 2004: Strategic Planning
Strategic Planning was the fourth seminar in a series of ten to be presented
by The Arizona Center for Innovation. The seminar defined a long-term
vision for your company, developed business strategies and tactics, assisted
in writing a mission statement, and promoted the adoption of realistic
performance milestones.
Seminar Series Wednesday December 17, 2003: Business Planning and Business
Development
The Business Planning Seminar held on December 17 at the University of
Arizona Science and Technology Park provided practical advice on how to
create a business plan and more. We would like to thank all the attendees
along with the presenters; Nancy Russell of the PCC Small Business Development
Center and Nancy Smith.

Series Wednesday November 19, 2003: Corporate Structure
The Corporate Structure seminar, held on November 19 at the University
of Arizona Science and Technology Park provided practical advice on how
to structure a company. We would like to thank all the attendees along
with the presenters; Larry Hecker of Hecker and Muehlebach and Richard
Stagg of Snell and Wilmer.
Seminar Series Wednesday October 15, 2003: Intellectual Property
and Technology Transfer
The Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer seminar, held on October
15, at the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park provided
practical advice on identifying and protecting Intellectual Property.

Arizona
Center for Innovation is Launched
(Tucson,
AZ) The University of Arizona, University of Arizona Science and Technology
Park, and Campus Research Corporation are announcing the opening of the
Arizona Center for Innovation (AzCI) at an open house at the University
of Arizona Science and Technology Park on Tuesday, July 22 at 3:00pm,
in Building 9040, the Presentation Room (room 1350).
